Welcome to slumpsville – population: me

I’m not going to lie, it’s not been the easiest start to the year for me. After a busy December with work, I would have liked a gentle January but had back to back work trips, which impacted on my energy levels. Then at the start of February I picked up one of these nasty colds that’s been going around and I’m struggling to shake it.

So my time and energy levels haven’t been helping me read. On top of that, I’ve had a couple of disappointing reads and so far this year I haven’t read anything I’ve really loved. There have been a few things I’ve enjoyed but nothing spectacular. That’s putting a lot of pressure on choosing what to pick up next.

So all in all I’ve found myself in a bit of a reading slump. I have a ridiculous number of books on my currently reading shelf (the majority for my research to be fair) but little motivation to pick any of them up. And I’m not sure what to do about it.

I have a couple of review books I need to get through in the next few weeks, one of which I’m halfway through, but the pressure of that actually isn’t helping. Usually I’d tell friends to reread a favourite when they are in a slump but I’m already rereading a book as part of a buddy read with a friend and I don’t want to get too far ahead. Also I feel a bit guilty about rereading when I have so many unread books sitting on shelves staring at me…

I’m on a long weekend away which is my first break from work since Christmas, and although we have various things planned there may be opportunities to pick up a book for a bit, and I’ve packed a novella from a favourite series, so we’ll see if I have time and motivation to pick it up over the next few days.

I have been aware as well that I have not been focusing enough on self care recently, and the winter weather hasn’t been helping my mood or health. Part of the reason for our weekend away is an art workshop tomorrow so I’m hoping that will give me a bit of a boost. I have also started a new crochet project this weekend which should help too.

Anywho, this is a bit of a ramble as my motivation for writing about reading has also slumped and I wanted to check in. What do you to do to get out of a reading slump?
